Angelina Jolie's very weird cover for Vanity Fair's October Issue is bound get a lot of mixed reactions. On one hand, the close-up, straight-on cropped shot shows off Angelina's stunning features. I mean, holy cheekbones! (Ahhh, the magic of contouring.) Angelina's unbearably famous and she's been photographed half to death, so photographers Mert Alas & Marcus Piggott deserve a firm handshake for finding a new way to showcase the world's most recognizable lips.
On the other hand, where is Angelina's neck? Drowning under the actress' perfect jawline. The star's brushed back hair and clean face seem soft and sprightly, but the deep shadows and aggressive close-up distort the mood of the photo. I can't tell if she's conjuring up a fairy or a serpent, but either way it isn't quite working.
Still: the tone might be off, but gorgeous doesn't even begin to cover the face in this photo. And the choice of cover star might have been predictable, but the actual cover was a risk.
