CHRISTIAN COTA FALL/WINTER 2009 PART 2

It’s only his fourth season showing under his namesake label, and Christian Cota, who recently won the Fashion Group International’s Rising Star Award, is one of fashion’s most exciting up-and-coming designers.  His Fall/Winter 2009 collection did not disappoint.

There was a painterly quality to many of his pieces, which the designer said were inspired by nature – a theme that came through particularly well in a black and beige look that reminded me of the Narciso Rodriguez dress First Lady Michelle Obama wore when her husband received the presidential nomination – only Cota’s was a younger, cooler version.

As with many of the collections we’ve seen so far, there was a futuristic vibe to many of the pieces – especially the printed ones – and an emphasis on billowing shoulders creating a modern day version of a power suit with clean, sleek lines.

There was a beautiful play between geometric details and fluid draping and the prints, inspired by the flecked surfaces of Chrysocalla, Palasite Meteorite and Mexico’s native Acanthite (silver sulfide), were a wonderful complement to the monochromatic pieces.

Lastly, the jewelry, provided by Kara Ross, who herself is often inspired by nature (she’s a certified gemologist), provided beautiful finishing touches to the looks.
