It’s hard to imagine that the same man behind the 80’s-inspired neon looks we saw at Marc Jacobs this season is behind the Little House on the Prairie-esque looks at Marc by Marc Jacobs – especially given that the diffusion line is aimed at a younger demographic.

If Marc Jacobs was aimed at the cool night-cluber, Marc by Marc Jacobs seemed aimed for her more serious, stay-at-home counterpart.

With silhouettes veering towards the slouchy and relaxed, lots of layering, inconspicuous hats (given everything else that was meeting the eye), and a multitude of deep, dark colors, the Fall/Winter 2009 Marc by Marc Jacobs collection had a distinctly crisp and grown-up fall feel to it.

No surprise then that the makeup inspiration, I was told by Shiseido’s Artistic Director Dick Page, was “in from the cold,” while Redken’s Creative Consultant Guido Palau told me that his hair team went for clean, pulled-back, and sleek.

The dresses, especially those that played with shoulder shapes, the quirky color-blocked tights, and the oversized bow-detailing on a handful of pieces were particularly noteworthy in this collection that will likely appeal to an even wider demographic than it usually does.
